Berkeley Breathed & Gahan Wilson are saying..."The fortunate thing about The Unfortunate Umbles is that Amy Luwis gave herself free reign, unleashing one of the silliest and most whimsically drawn alphabet books ever."

"Amy Luwis has written a naughty book called The Unfortunate Umbles and she was a bad little girl for doing it and I enjoyed it very much."

"The Unfortunate Umbles just might be the most clever little chrestomathic alphabet book Ive ever seen."

Writing a Novel

Alphabet books are one of the oldest literary genres and have always been quite firmly devoted to helping children learn. Although The Umbles sits comfortably in this category, it is much more eager to skulk around adult cocktail parties and literary salons of a bygone era. Like Edward Goreys superbly unique alphabet book, The Gashlycrumb Tinies, The Umbles is a welcome member to the adult picture book genre.

Adults will be bemused while reading this to their little ones. Little ones will be beguiled. Those lacking an offbeat sense of humor will be quite lost.
